How to use the JSON Formatter

  1. Paste your JSON, open a .json file or load the sample.
  2. Pick Beautify (2 spaces, 4 spaces or tabs) or Minify, and optionally sort keys A→Z.
  3. Switch to Tree view to expand and collapse objects and arrays.
  4. Copy the result or download it as a .json file.

Frequently asked questions

What does a JSON formatter do?

It re-prints JSON with consistent indentation and line breaks so nested objects and arrays are easy to read. The data itself doesn't change — only whitespace is added or removed.

What's the difference between beautify and minify?

Beautify adds indentation and line breaks for humans. Minify removes all optional whitespace to make the file as small as possible for APIs and storage; both represent exactly the same data.

Does sorting keys change my data?

No. JSON objects are unordered by definition, so sorting keys only changes how the document is printed. Arrays keep their original order. One quirk: keys that look like whole numbers ("1", "42") are always printed first, in numeric order, because that's how JavaScript orders object keys.

Why did a very long number change after formatting?

JavaScript stores numbers as 64-bit floats, so integers above 9,007,199,254,740,991 (2^53 − 1) lose precision when parsed. The tool warns you when this happens; store large IDs as strings to keep every digit.

Can it handle large JSON files?

Yes. Files of several megabytes are parsed in your browser after you stop typing, and the tree view opens big documents a few levels at a time so the page stays responsive.

Is my JSON sent to a server?

No. Formatting, validation and the tree view all run locally in your browser, so API responses, configs and tokens never leave your device.
