Frequently asked questions

What is Base64 encoding?

Base64 represents binary data using 64 safe ASCII characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /). It's used to put files and binary data inside text formats like JSON, email (MIME), HTML and CSS data URLs.

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption — anyone can decode it. Never use it to hide passwords or secrets.

Why is the Base64 output bigger than the input?

Every 3 bytes of input become 4 Base64 characters, so encoded data is about 33% larger (plus line breaks if you wrap lines).

What is URL-safe Base64 (base64url)?

base64url replaces + with - and / with _ and drops the = padding, so the result can be used in URLs, file names and JWTs without escaping. This tool decodes both variants automatically.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Encoding and decoding run entirely in your browser; your text and files never leave your device.
