Frequently asked questions
How long should a title tag be?
Aim for 30–60 characters. Google truncates titles at roughly 580–600 pixels wide on desktop, which is about 60 characters, so put the most important words first.
How long should a meta description be?
About 70–160 characters. Google usually shows up to around 155–160 characters and may rewrite descriptions that don't match the search, but a good one still improves clicks.
What is a canonical tag?
<link rel="canonical"> tells search engines which URL is the preferred version of a page when the same content is reachable at several addresses. Most pages should have a self-referencing canonical.
What are Open Graph tags?
og:title, og:description, og:image and og:url control how a link looks when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack and others. Use an og:image of 1200×630 pixels for a large preview.
Do meta keywords still matter?
No. Google has ignored the meta keywords tag for years, and Bing treats it as a weak spam signal at best. You can safely remove it.
Why are my tags missing when the page clearly has them?
We read the HTML your server sends, without running JavaScript. If tags are added by client-side JavaScript, use server-side rendering so all crawlers see them.
