Frequently asked questions

What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are tags added to a URL's query string (like ?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email) that tell analytics tools where a visit came from. Google Analytics reads them when the page loads and attributes the session to that source, medium and campaign.

Which UTM parameters are required?

Google's own Campaign URL Builder marks utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign as required, so always set all three. GA4's default channel groups are based on source and medium, and without a campaign name your reports are hard to read. Term, content and ID are optional.

Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?

Yes. GA4 treats “Facebook”, “facebook” and “FaceBook” as three different sources. Keep everything lower case and use underscores or hyphens instead of spaces — the normalise option does this for you.

What should I use for utm_medium?

Use values GA4 recognises so traffic lands in the right channel: cpc or ppc for paid search, paid_social for social ads, social for organic posts, email for newsletters, display, affiliate, referral, video or sms. Unknown mediums show up as “Unassigned”.

Should I use UTM tags on internal links?

No. Tagging links between pages of your own site starts a new session attribution and overwrites the real source (for example, organic search). Use UTMs only on links that point to your site from elsewhere — ads, emails, social posts and partners.

Do UTM parameters affect SEO?

Not when used on external campaign links. If tagged URLs ever get linked publicly, a canonical tag pointing to the clean URL prevents duplicate-content issues.
