How to use the Sitemap Generator
- Paste full URLs one per line, or switch to Base URL + paths and paste paths like /about.
- Choose whether to include lastmod, changefreq and priority.
- Check the skipped lines list for anything that wasn't a valid URL.
- Copy or download sitemap.xml (and each part file if the list was split) and upload it to your site's root.
Frequently asked questions
How do I submit my sitemap to Google?
Upload sitemap.xml to your site (usually https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml), open Google Search Console, choose your property, go to Sitemaps, enter the sitemap URL and click Submit. Search Console then shows when it was read and how many URLs were found.
How do I add my sitemap to robots.txt?
Add a line with the full URL anywhere in robots.txt, for example: Sitemap: https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml. Every search engine that reads robots.txt, including Bing, can then find it without a manual submission.
Should I include lastmod, changefreq and priority?
Include lastmod only if it's accurate — Google uses it when it can trust it. Google ignores changefreq and priority, but they're valid and some other search engines read them.
What happens with more than 50,000 URLs?
A single sitemap may hold at most 50,000 URLs and 50 MB. This generator splits larger lists into sitemap-1.xml, sitemap-2.xml and so on, plus a sitemap index (sitemap.xml) that lists them — submit just the index.
Which URLs should go in a sitemap?
Only canonical, indexable pages that return HTTP 200: no redirects, 404s, noindex pages, or duplicate URLs with tracking parameters. Use the same protocol and host (e.g. https://www.) as your live site.
Are special characters escaped?
Yes. Spaces and non-ASCII characters are percent-encoded, and &, <, >, quotes and apostrophes are written as XML entities, so the file parses correctly.
