Frequently asked questions

How do I write Taka in words on a cheque?

Write “Taka”, the amount in words with lakh and crore, then “Only”: for 1,25,000 that's “Taka One Lakh Twenty-Five Thousand Only”. In Bangla: “এক লক্ষ পঁচিশ হাজার টাকা মাত্র”. Paisa come after the Taka: “… and Fifty Paisa Only”.

What is the difference between lakh/crore and million/billion?

They group digits differently. 1 lakh is 1,00,000 (one hundred thousand), 10 lakh is one million, and 1 crore is 1,00,00,000 (ten million). Bangladesh and India use lakh and crore; most other countries use million and billion.

How are decimals written?

On a cheque, decimals become paisa or cents, rounded to two places. For a plain number they are read digit by digit: 12.05 is “twelve point zero five” or “বারো দশমিক শূন্য পাঁচ”.

How big can the number be?

Up to 20 digits before the decimal point. Amounts above 99 crore are read in crore, such as “one lakh crore” for 1,00,00,00,00,000.
