Frequently asked questions
What is a public IP address?
It's the address websites see when you connect to them. Your router or mobile carrier shares it between all the devices behind it; inside your home network each device also has a private address like 192.168.1.20 that the internet never sees.
Why is my location wrong?
IP location is an estimate from databases that map address blocks to places. It's usually right about the country but can be tens or hundreds of kilometres off for the city, and mobile networks often route traffic through a distant hub.
Does my IP address change?
Most home connections get a dynamic IP that can change when your router restarts or your lease expires. Mobile connections change often. Businesses can pay for a static IP that stays the same.
Why do I see an IPv6 address instead of IPv4?
If your provider and device support IPv6, browsers prefer it, so websites see your IPv6 address. You probably have an IPv4 address too — it's just not used for this connection.
How do I hide my IP address?
A VPN, Tor or a proxy makes websites see the address of that service instead of yours. Reload this page after connecting to check it's working.
Do you store my IP address?
No. We read it from your request to show it back to you. Apart from a short-lived in-memory counter that prevents abuse, nothing is kept.
