Frequently asked questions

What is a good ping?

Under 30 ms is excellent and under 60 ms is good for gaming and video calls. 100–150 ms is noticeable, and above 150 ms feels laggy. Distance matters: light in fibre adds roughly 1 ms of round-trip time per 100 km.

What does 'Request timed out' mean?

No reply came back in time. It can be real packet loss, but many servers and firewalls simply ignore ping, so a site can work perfectly in a browser while ping times out.

What is jitter?

Jitter is how much the delay varies from one packet to the next. Steady 80 ms is often better for calls than a ping that jumps between 20 and 120 ms. Under 15 ms is good; above 30 ms causes choppy audio and video.

What does TTL mean in ping?

Time To Live is a counter that each router decreases by one, so packets can't loop forever. Systems start at 64 (Linux, macOS), 128 (Windows) or 255 (network devices), so the TTL you see hints at the target's OS and how many hops away it is.

Why can't this website ping for me?

Ping uses ICMP packets, which web browsers aren't allowed to send. Running ping on your own computer also measures your connection, which is usually what you want to test.

How do I reduce packet loss and high ping?

Use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi, pause large downloads and uploads, restart your router, and test against a nearby server. If loss persists on a wired connection, contact your internet provider.
