Frequently asked questions

How do I write in italics on Instagram or X?

These apps don't offer italic formatting in posts or bios. This tool uses Unicode "Mathematical Italic" letters, which carry the slant in the characters themselves, so it survives copy and paste.

Why does the italic h look slightly different?

Unicode already had an italic h — ℎ, the Planck constant symbol — before the math italic alphabet was added, so the italic alphabet reuses it. In some fonts it looks a little different from the other letters.

Are there italic numbers?

No. Unicode has bold, double-struck, sans-serif and monospace digits, but no italic ones, so numbers stay normal in italic styles.

Does italic text work in Discord?

Yes, but Discord also supports real formatting: wrap text in *asterisks* for italics. Unicode italics are handy for nicknames and places where Markdown doesn't work.

Is Unicode italic text accessible?

Not fully — screen readers may read it oddly and search engines don't index it as normal words. Keep it to short highlights.
