Frequently asked questions
Do spaces count as characters?
Yes, on almost every platform — X, SMS, meta descriptions and form fields all count spaces and line breaks. The “without spaces” number is mainly for school assignments and translation pricing.
Why does an emoji sometimes count as 2 characters?
Many emoji are stored as two UTF-16 units, and some (skin tones, flags, families) are several code points joined together. This tool counts what you see, so 👍🏽 is 1; X counts every emoji as 2, and some databases count each UTF-16 unit.
How many characters fit in one SMS?
160 characters if the message only uses the GSM-7 alphabet, or 70 if it contains any other character, such as an emoji, curly quote or Bangla letter. Longer messages are split into parts of 153 (GSM-7) or 67 (Unicode) characters each.
How long should an SEO title and meta description be?
Keep title tags around 50–60 characters and meta descriptions around 150–160. Google actually truncates by pixel width, so wide letters like W and M use up the space faster.
How does X (Twitter) count characters?
Posts are limited to 280 weighted characters. Latin letters count 1, but each emoji and each Chinese, Japanese or Korean character counts 2, and any link counts as 23 no matter how long it is.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. All counting runs in your browser, so nothing you type leaves your device.
