Frequently asked questions

What is a URL slug?

The slug is the human-readable part at the end of a URL that identifies a page, such as “best-budget-laptops” in example.com/blog/best-budget-laptops. Good slugs are short, lowercase and describe the page.

Should I use hyphens or underscores in URLs?

Use hyphens. Google treats hyphens as word separators, while words joined by underscores may be read as one word. Underscores are mainly used for file names and code identifiers.

Should I remove stop words like “the” and “of”?

Often yes — dropping them keeps slugs short without losing meaning (“the-best-way-to-learn-python” → “best-way-learn-python”). Keep them when they change the meaning or the slug reads badly without them.

How long should a slug be?

There's no hard limit, but 3–6 meaningful words (roughly 50–60 characters or less) is a good target. Shorter URLs are easier to share and less likely to be truncated in search results.

What happens to accented and non-English letters?

Accents are removed (é → e, ñ → n) and special letters are spelled out (ß → ss, æ → ae, ø → o, ł → l); basic Cyrillic and Greek are transliterated. Scripts like Bangla, Arabic or Chinese can't be converted reliably, so use “Keep Unicode letters” — browsers then percent-encode them automatically.

Should I change the slug of a published page?

Only if you must. Changing a URL loses links and rankings unless you add a 301 redirect from the old address to the new one.
